Halifax Schools & Universities
The curriculum of study in public schools throughout Nova Scotia is established by the Provincial Department of Education but the operation of individual schools is controlled by local school boards. In the Metro area, that would include:
Generally, the school nearest your new home will be the one which your grade-school children would attend, but there are some exceptions. Please contact the school board in your area for any clarifications regarding this matter.
Children living in the County of Halifax are usually bussed to the nearest school serving their age and grade level.
There are also a number of private schools and schools in both official languages, French & English. There are also schools equipped to handle students with special needs.
A School for the Blind is located in Halifax and a School for the Deaf is located in Amherst, Nova Scotia, with "out classes" held in the Halifax area.
Halifax Metro area has over 20,000 full-time students registered for post-secondary education at universities and associated schools.

The largest university in Metro, with professional faculties of medicine, dentistry, law & graduate studies.
The Technical University
Offers degrees in engineering and architecture, as well as graduate studies leading to a doctoral degree in engineering. St. Mary's University & Mount Saint Vincent
Offers pre-professional courses as well as degrees in education, history, philosophy, astronomy and business administration.
The Nova Scotia College of Art & Design
Offers degrees and diploma courses.
The Atlantic School of Theology
A degree granting ecumenical centre of study.
Continuing Education
Offered by the Universities, leading to degrees in over 500 courses through various provincially-operated or civic administered facilities.
Vocational & Trade Schools
Situated throughout the Halifax/Dartmouth area, with a wide variety of courses.
